Frequently Asked Questions
THE EXPERIENCE
What’s included in the retreat?
Everything except your flight to/from Nicaragua: 7 nights accommodation in shared villa-style ensuite rooms with private beach access, all meals (3 per day plus snacks and wine), airport transfers, in-country transportation during the retreat, daily yoga, one 60-minute massage, two private one-on-ones with Terri, catamaran sunset sail, all workshops and materials, and other surprises.
What makes this different from other women's retreats?
This retreat is specifically designed for midlife women who are done living by someone else's rules. You get two private one-on-ones with Terri, a small intimate group (only 8 women), and a framework that actually translates to your real life when you get home. But here's what really sets it apart: Terri prides herself on being the "hostess with the mostess" and has planned themed evenings designed to bring joy, whimsy, and playfulness back into your life. You'll feel pampered, supported, and loved—plus there are surprises that will make this a truly unique experience.
What if I'm not "a retreat person"?
Perfect—neither was Terri until she created the retreat she wished existed! This isn't about chanting or sitting in circles (unless you want to). It's about real conversations, practical tools, and giving yourself permission to think about YOUR life for once. Plus champagne, good food, the beach, and free time for you to choose what you want to do.
What's the daily schedule like?
You'll receive a detailed schedule after registration, but generally: morning yoga (optional), breakfast, morning workshop session, lunch, afternoon workshop, free time for beach/massage/rest, sunset on the beach, dinner, and evening activities. We balance structured time with plenty of space to breathe.
I took your Stanford Continuing Studies course—will this be repetitive?
The concepts will be familiar, but the EXPERIENCE is completely different. The retreat format allows for deeper processing, more personal attention (including your two one-on-ones), and immersive implementation. Think of the course as ground school as you are learning to fly; the retreat is getting in the cockpit.
Can I book additional massages or spa treatments?
Absolutely! Your retreat includes one 60-minute massage on Monday or Tuesday afternoon, but if you want to extend the pampering, our partners Pure Spa and Glow offer additional services that you can book separately:
💆♀️ Pure Spa: Additional massages, facials, and spa treatments
💅 Glow: Pedicures and nail services
You'll receive information on available services and pricing after registration, and you can arrange appointments in advance or once you arrive.
ACCOMMODATIONS AND COMFORT
Can I come alone?
Absolutely—and most women do! Coming solo means you get to focus entirely on YOU for once (radical concept, we know). You'll be part of an intimate group of just 8 women, so you'll actually get to know everyone. Plus Christy and I promise to make sure no one feels left out or alone.
Do I need to share a room?
Yes, but rest assured each room has ample space for two women to share and, if you’re traveling solo, you will be thoughtfully matched prior to your arrival.
Beyond offering plenty of space, each room is villa-style with an ensuite bathroom and private beach access.
If you’re bringing a friend, that will be noted at the time of registration and the two of you will be paired.
When I went to Necker Island the first time, I shared a bungalow with a complete stranger and while hesitant at first, it turned out to be the best thing ever. We got to act like they were in high school or college again, getting ready together, talking late into the night, and the following year we requested to room with each other so we could do it all over again. We are still the best of friends as a result and could not imagine the experience on the island without a roommate.
How often do we get the chance to make friends in midlife like this?
What if I'm an introvert? This sounds like a lot of people time.
We hear you! The schedule is designed with intentional breaks—morning beach time, free afternoons, quiet spaces to retreat to. You're invited to participate in everything, but you're also invited to take care of yourself. Need to skip the evening activity and read in your room? Do it. Want to have lunch alone on the beach? Go for it. This retreat is about honoring what YOU need.
What if I can’t do yoga?
Yoga is optional and all-levels. You're welcome to skip it and enjoy quiet morning coffee and beach time instead. Everything at this retreat is an invitation, not a requirement. You have too many external demands in your life already. Here, you have choice.
Will I have cell service and WiFi?
Yes, there is WiFi at the retreat location, Casa Pasatiempo. Cell service varies by carrier. We encourage you to unplug as much as feels right for you, but we understand you may need to check in with family or work. Or post on social media!
Are there safes in the rooms for storing valuables?
Absolutely. Every guest room is equipped with an individual safe where you can securely store your passport, cash, jewelry, and electronics during your stay.
FOOD AND SPECIAL NEEDS
What about dietary restrictions?
We will make every effort to accommodate dietary needs and restrictions—vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and common allergies. The retreat is catered by local providers who work with fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, and we'll work closely with them on your specific needs. You'll indicate your dietary requirements on your intake form after registration. While we can't guarantee every specialty item will be available in rural Nicaragua, we're committed to making sure you're well-fed and happy.
TRAVEL LOGISTICS
I’ve never been to Nicaragua…is it safe?
Yes! Nicaragua is actually rated the 2nd safest country in Central America. We're staying in a gated resort community (Hacienda Iguana Golf & Beach Club) on the peaceful Emerald Coast. All transportation is private. Nicaragua is a popular destination for wellness retreats and adventure travel. You'll receive detailed travel information after registration.

How do I get there?
Fly into Managua International Airport (MGA). We provide transportation from the airport to the retreat center (about 2.5 hours)—the fun begins on the drive to the retreat location! The ideal time to book your flight is 45–60 days prior to your departure, when you're most likely to find the least expensive airfare with the most options. Feel free to contact us if you need assistance with your booking or if you'd like to be on the same flight(s) as other participants.
When should I arrive and depart?
We recommend arriving in Managua by early afternoon on March 7th. Plan to depart after 12 PM on March 14th. This gives you the full retreat experience without feeling rushed on either end. We'll coordinate pickup times to group travelers when possible.
What should I pack?
We'll send a detailed packing list after registration, but here's the essence: casual comfortable clothes, swimsuit, yoga wear (if you're joining yoga), sandals, and an open heart. Plus a few fun items for our themed evenings—think pajamas, something sparkly, and one book to share. More details to come!
We'll provide sunscreen, bug spray, and bath products (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, hand soap) from a local, woman-owned business, at the property, so you can pack lighter. This isn't a fashion show—the focus is on being comfortable as we do the big evolutionary work of redesigning your life. That said, it's a gorgeous location and we'll absolutely support your Instagrammable moments. Pack light, pack comfortable, and leave room in your suitcase—you'll be leaving some “baggage” behind and bringing home a few surprises.
Do I need a voltage adapter?
Nope! If you're coming from the US or Canada, Nicaragua operates on 110 volts AC, so your devices will work without an adapter.
Do I need a passport? A visa?
Yes, you need a valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates).
No special visa is required for US and Canadian passport holders for this week-long trip. Other nationalities should check Nicaragua's visa requirements for their country.
You will need **$10 USD cash** to pay the entry fee when you arrive at customs in Managua. They don't accept ripped or damaged bills and they don't make change—I learned this the hard way when I paid with a $20 and accidentally gave the customs agent a very generous tip. Bring exact change!
Do I need to be able to speak Spanish?
Hacienda Iguana is an international ex-pat community and nearly everyone speaks English. We do believe that speaking the language of a place that you visit is courteous and would be helpful and appreciated as you make your way through the airport. You are invited to learn a few phrases like hello, please, thank you, goodbye, where are the toilets, and of course, donde esta la biblioteca? (IYKYK…or just learn where is the bathroom?)
What's the weather like in March?
Nicaragua in March is warm and dry—perfect beach weather! Daytime temperatures are typically 85-90°F, with cooler evenings. Sunset is around 5:45 PM.
What's the local time zone?
Nicaragua is in Central Standard Time (CST) and doesn't observe daylight saving time. In the winter, Nicaragua is 2 hours ahead of California, but the US springs forward at 2 AM on March 14th, so Nicaragua will be 2 hours ahead of Pacific time during your retreat, except the last day when you leave when it will be 1 hour ahead. Sunrise is around 6:00 AM and sunset around 6:00 PM year-round—perfect for maximizing your beach time!
Can I extend my stay in Nicaragua?
Absolutely! Consider adding extra days to explore Nicaragua (Granada, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe Island). We're happy to share recommendations.
Can I drink the tap water?
The water at the retreat location, Casa Pasatiempo, is spring-fed and safe to drink, but there will be purified water for drinking. Pack light—you don't need to bring a case of water bottles!
Do I need local currency?
Not really. Everything is included in your retreat fee, so you won't need much cash during the week. If you want to buy souvenirs USD is widely accepted throughout Nicaragua. If you do want to exchange some money to Cordobas, just make sure your bills are in good condition (no rips or markings—vendors won't accept them).
Are there ATMs nearby?
Yes, there's an ATM in the community and another just outside the gates. That said, we recommend bringing some cash with you since ATMs can be unreliable. Remember: your meals, activities, and transportation are all covered, so you'll only need spending money for personal extras.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Do I need any immunizations?
We highly recommend visiting your doctor or local travel health clinic. Most travelers from the US and Canada only need to ensure their tetanus shot is current. You'll receive detailed health information after registration.
What if there is an emergency?
Your safety is our number one priority. Christy's company, Venture-Within, keeps an updated list of local emergency contacts. We have set emergency procedures in place and there is always a contact person that can be reached 24/7.
For minor medical needs, there's a Farmacia Iguana on-site with a bilingual doctor and pharmacist available daily (9 AM-5 PM, with after-hours emergency coverage). For more serious situations, there are hospitals nearby and pharmacies with medication readily available. In addition, you are required to provide us with your emergency contact details on your application form.
